April Conversation Series: Gena Cox

Mark your calendar for the April 2023 Conversation Series event featuring Gena Cox, who will talk about science for a more inclusive workplace.

Ensuring Inclusive Environments and Cultures was the #4 Top 10 Work Trends 2023. This trend stresses the challenges in ensuring inclusive environments and cultures. The wave of layoffs, particularly in large tech companies, disproportionately impacted diversity and inclusion roles, with some companies laying off entire diversity teams. This makes the experts and the public wonder just how sincere the diversity efforts of the last three years have been. Going beyond the inclusion façade means that employees from different demographic groups are equally able to impact organizational decision-making.

I-O psychology can help organizations measure this type of impact and support inclusion beyond the façade and checking boxes. Deep-level inclusion work requires a systemic approach and systems thinking. Building the systemic thinking advantage in organizations requires, in part, diversifying the collective cognition in leadership. One of the ways to do this is through neurodiversity inclusion – a topic of growing significance that was a focus of the latest issue of the Industrial and Organizational Psychology journal. Of course, increasing neurodiversity in leadership will require letting go of stereotypes and biases that impact both practice and research.

Cox, inclusion expert and CEO at Feels Human LLC., will share insights on how leaders can build inclusive organizations from the top down. She earned her Ph.D. in I-O psychology from the University of South Florida, is the author of the recently published book Leading Inclusion, and has decades of experience guiding leaders as they build psychologically healthy workplaces. Cox has recently served SIOP in the roles of co-chair of the SIOP Awards Committee and member of the planning committee for the Leading Edge Consortium.
