Opportunities to Continue Conversations About Race

SIOP and the SIOP Foundation, together with our members and donors, support I-O science and practice that address the problem of racism in the workplace. Below are three online resources to continue the conversation, including an upcoming webinar featuring SIOP members.

  • Confronting Racial Injustice: A Servant-Leader’s Response
This webinar will look at the servant-leader’s response to the challenges society is facing in 2020. Panelists Elsa Holguin, president and CEO of the Denver Preschool Program, and SIOP member Tyree Mitchell, assistant professor at Louisiana State University, will assist the audience with a deeper understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion. SIOP Member Enrica Ruggs, assistant professor at the University of Memphis will moderate. The webinar begins at 2 p.m. EST Sept. 30. This webinar is presented by the Robert K. Greenleaf Center for Servant Leadership; register here.

  • BRAVE Conversations About Race
On Sept. 8, SIOP members Enrica Ruggs and Derek Avery, the C.T. Bauer Chair of Inclusive Leadership in the Bauer College of Business at the University of Houston, provided frameworks for organizations and individuals to use in discussing race in the program BRAVE Conversations About Race, which was presented by MIT Sloan Management Review.

  • Earlier this summer, SIOP member Enrica Ruggs joined the Indigo Podcast to talk about Race, Organizations, and the Role of Leaders. You can find that insightful recording online.

I-O psychologists conduct and apply research that improves the well-being and performance of people and the organizations that employ them. Because the presence of overt and institutionalized racial discrimination constitutes direct and indirect threats to the well-being and performance of employees and employers, anti-racism in the workplace is a topic that I-O psychology as a field must address. More information about SIOP’s Stand Against Racism can be found online.
