Tammy D. Allen, PhD
Candidate Statement:
It has been my privilege to serve SIOP in a variety of roles including Program Chair, Research and Science Officer, and President. Most recently over the past two and a half years I have served as one of the Division 14 Council Representatives within APA. This role has provided unique insight into the complexities of APA as an organization. I am seeking a second and final term as one of SIOP’s APA Council Representatives. I believe I can take what I have learned from serving in this role and leverage my cumulative experience to continue to effectively advocate for I-O psychology within both APA and SIOP. The relationship between APA and SIOP is at a crossroads as various efforts to advance the interests of I-O psychology within APA, such as the establishment of the Office of Applied Science, have begun to take root but are yet to flourish. My experiences within APA and SIOP enable me to effectively represent SIOP members on issues within APA such as advocacy, licensure, and efforts to advance support for applied psychology. Moreover, APA’s strategic goals such as utilizing psychology to make a positive impact on critical societal issues and elevation of the public’s understanding of, regard for, and use of psychology are aligned with the strategic goals of SIOP. It is my hope that by strengthening these partnerships, we can make progress toward the achievement of our mutual strategic objectives.

Candidate Statement:
I would be honored to serve as an APA Council Representative representing APA Division 14 (Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology). I am a Division 14 Fellow, have been an active member of SIOP and APA for over 30 years and have served on many SIOP committees, including the Professional Practice Series committee, the Awards Committee (as the Chair of the M. Scott Myers Award Subcommittee), the Professional Practice Committee, the Visibility Committee and the Fellowship Committee. I was the first Chair of the SIOP Visibility Committee (2000 – 2002) and helped to set the direction of that thriving and important committee by establishing processes for activities that are still carried out today, such as helping to generate positive press associated with the annual SIOP Conference. Currently, I am the Chief Professional Services Officer of PDRI an SHL company. I was the lead author of Career Paths: Charting Courses to Success for Organizations and Their Employees and co-editor of Career Pathways: From School to Retirement. I obtained a Ph.D. in Industrial and Organizational Psychology from the University of Minnesota. My background as a scientist-practitioner and business executive combined with my many years of service on SIOP committees makes me an ideal candidate to represent the interests of Division 14 and to effectively influence the emphases and funding priorities of APA as an APA Council Representative. I would very much appreciate your support.

Candidate Statement:
Our Society – SIOP – needs to have a sustained voice in APA’s governance, ensuring that our interests, needs, and perspective are fully represented in APA’s positions and activities. The issues of employment, accomplishing work, sustaining climate in remote work, among many others need to be part of the conversation around the impact of COVID-19 on our society. A discussion of racism and discrimination sure needs to include a focus on discrimination and inclusion in the workplace. Looking forward, any discussion of technology advances ought to have a focus on the impact on workers and employment. As an applied research scientist embedded in a very large government organization, I am constantly confronted with these issues and more. I hope to bring that awareness to representing you and our Society in the APA Council, working with SIOP’s other Council Representatives to ensure that APA also pays attention to the issues we all care deeply about.

Stephen Stark, PhD
Candidate Statement:
Since joining SIOP in 1998, I’ve actively participated in society affairs by presenting at annual meetings, serving on committees, and representing SIOP on the APA Council (2017-19), when there were important decisions about professional ethics, testing, graduate training, and science advocacy. I’ve had the privilege of learning from and working closely with several former SIOP presidents, whose professional influences extend well beyond traditional “boundaries” of I-O psychology. These relationships strengthened my belief that I-O psychologists must connect with professionals in other disciplines to stay abreast of developments, anticipate the implications for our field, and take advantage of opportunities to demonstrate and promote the value of I-O research and practice to larger audiences of psychologists, educators, and, importantly, the public and its elected representatives.
My research, teaching, and consulting over the last 20+ years has spanned fields, and I’ve maintained connections with other societies, most notably, APA, NCME, AOM, and International Military Testing Association. In 2014 I became a Fellow of SIOP and APA (Div.14), and I’ve held memberships in Divisions 5 and 19 because of my longstanding research with the military. I’ve also served on the International Test Commission Council and National Research Council committees, sponsored by the U.S. Army and Air Force, that focused on measuring human capabilities and human capital management. For 15 years, I’ve additionally served as Chair/Vice-Chair of my community Board of Supervisors. Civic, university, and professional engagement are fundamentally important to me, and it would be my honor to represent SIOP on the APA Council.

Candidate Statement:
What do SIOP members need from a new APA Council Representative? SIOP members need a strong advocate for both the science and practice of I/O Psychology who understands APA and COR governance, who has established relationships on Council and within APA and knows key players, who understands the current context of applied psychology in APA, who understands important initiatives coming before Council that impact SIOP members, who understands the professional diversity of psychology, and who has a successful track record of working with clinical and other healthcare psychologists to find common ground.
I ask for your vote because I can meet all these needs. My career integrates both I/O research and practice as a consultant, entrepreneur, and researcher. I received SIOP’s 2019 Scientist-Practitioner Presidential Recognition, and am a Fellow of SIOP, Division 19, and APA. I have been actively involved in APA since 2014 and have developed many relationships across divisions and with APA staff and leadership through my roles as Division 19 President and Secretary and my service on APA’s Advisory Group for Applied Psychology (2019). I presented to APA’s Board of Directors and even was a stand-in representative at APA Council (February 2020). I understand APA governance and the current APA context/issues and have established relationships. My Division 19 leadership roles have provided me understanding of psychology’s professional diversity and experience working with clinical and healthcare psychologists for common objectives. I will be a strong voice for SIOP members and I/O Psychology. Thanks for your consideration and support.
