Together, neuroscience and I-O psychology offer powerful tools for helping people and organizations deliver peak performance by understanding and managing human behavior at work.

In this virtual workshop presented by SIOP and GAIOP, the Georgia Association for Industrial and Organizational Psychology, Dr. Gary Lambert, an I-O psychologist with executive experience in several industry verticals, including Fortune 100 organizations, teams up with Dr. Kelly Lambert, a researcher and educator with expertise in behavioral and clinical neuroscience and neuroplasticity, whose research has been widely published in academic and popular media.

Together, they will share actionable insights about optimal decision-making, resilience, and coping styles, among other topics. This workshop will also give participants first-hand experience using powerful online cognitive training programs targeting important work behaviors and specific brain processes.

Intended Audience

This session is intended for a general audience at a post-graduate level; no specific content knowledge is required.

Session Abstract

This workshop will highlight innovative neuroscience research using both animal models and field research applications in the work world.

Research with contingency-trained (worker rats) and noncontingency-trained (trust fund rats) provide insights about optimal decision-making and resilience. Coping styles and enriched environments will also be discussed in the context of maintaining healthy neural circuits for optimal performance and decreased susceptibility to age-related cognitive decline.

The second half of the workshop will introduce powerful online cognitive training programs that target and change specific brain processes and important work behaviors. Participants will gain first-hand experience using these programs and be asked to identify and discuss future applications of these findings to enhance performance in the workplace.

Learning Objectives

After this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Learn about contingency training and “effort-based rewards” and how they impact motivation and resilience
  • Discuss the importance of effective coping strategies in dealing with chronic stress
  • Understand how enriched environments enable more learning and higher levels of performance
  • Introduce powerful online cognitive training programs and how they can be used to enhance performance
  • Describe field research applications to date in the work world and identify potential future applications
  • Gain first-hand experience with online cognitive training programs
