Amber Stark / Tuesday, October 29, 2024 / Categories: Member News, Items of Interest, SIOP Source Ombudsperson Accepts Second Term In 2022, the SIOP Executive Board appointed two members to serve as ombuds for the SIOP community, in accordance with the SIOP Anti-Harassment Policy. SIOP Fellows Dr. Elizabeth (Betsy) Shoenfelt and Dr. Margaret (Peggy) Stockdale were selected to serve in this important role for SIOP, effective January 1, 2022. Originally, Shoenfelt was set to serve until December 31, 2025, and Stockdale until December 31, 2024. Stockdale, however, recently accepted a second term and will now serve until December 31, 2027. “I have been honored to serve with Betsy Shoenfelt as SIOP's inaugural ombuds,” Stockdale said. “We feel that we have helped SIOP members navigate their options if they have experienced or witnessed harassment in conjunction with SIOP events and activities or to lend an ear when someone wants to think through an uncomfortable situation. Fortunately, these matters do not appear to be widespread, but it's essential that SIOP be a safe place for students and I-O professionals and we're glad to be here to help.” Shoenfelt and Stockdale bring significant relevant experience to the role and also received additional special training on harassment, options for informal resolution and formal complaint under the policy, and the role of an ombud. Their primary function is to offer advice that is informal, impartial, and independent. They do not make decisions or judgments. They can advise on options for informal resolution and formal complaint, explain the complaint processes, and assist with mediation. “The Ombuds provide a safe, non-judgmental perspective to help resolve concerns," said SIOP President-Elect Scott Tannenbaum.
