Research Gateway Offers Access to Quality Research at an Affordable Price

By Martin Royal, Visibility Committee

The application of evidence-based practices in one’s work helps us stand out as I-O psychology practitioners. Whether it is to formulate a solution or an intervention, analyze a client problem, implement or evaluate a solution, develop a new product/service, or to present a pitch, the rigor of evidence-based practices allows to better serve clients who seek our help.

As many of you might have experienced, including scholarly research in our practices can be challenging. Sometimes, the clients have no interest in evidence-based approach, we don't have time to search and read the evidence, we may find it hard to find relevant evidence, or the cost of access to databases can be high for individuals. Accessing full-text journal articles found through research using common search engines is often limited due to research database provider paywalls.

SIOP has been instrumental in supporting I-O practitioners to find and use scholarly research in their practice. We are re-introducing the Research Gateway, formerly known as SIOP Research Access, as an updated service to members who seek out access to a quality research tool at an affordable price.

The cost to access academic databases is often prohibitive for individuals and, in many cases, downright impossible without an institutional license. For the equivalent of $5 a month (as part of an annual subscription), the Research Gateway service gives you access to the key databases used by I-O psychology practitioners, including full-text access to many high-profile academic journals.

The service is powered by EBSCO and provides access to academic databases such as the Psychology & Behavioral Sciences Collection, the SocINDEX with Full Text, Regional Business News, and the McClatchy-Tribune Collection.

In addition to providing members with access to academic databases, the Research Gateway makes available selected videos from SIOP’s annual conference and consortia, and other media-based resources created by and for SIOP members.

We invite you to test it out and see for yourself how the service can support your research needs!
