But what follows that? How will leaders learn to lead in the new world that emerges? The last CHRO Advisory Board meeting for 2020 will be a panel discussion on the challenges that leaders will face in the world that emerges after the global crises gripping us all are resolved. The panel will look at three topics: The trends that have led us to the “dark tunnel” we now face and how they might shape the future The fallacy of VUCA (volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity) and how we can avoid once again becoming “comfortably numb” The challenges leaders will need to face to be able to lead effectively in this new world SIOP members who serve in chief human resources officer roles are invited to attend A Conversation about Leadership After the After at 11 a.m. ET Nov. 24. For decades, we have been moving through a period in which we have become increasingly numb to gathering forces that would bring about dramatic change in the fundamental structure of the world in which we live, work, and try to thrive. The COVID-19 pandemic was the spark that ignited these forces and pushed us into a dark tunnel of transition and reset. Emergence from the tunnel requires the type of effort from leaders often seen in prolonged crisis conditions. As Marshal Goldsmith has told us, every crisis requires a simultaneous focus on ethics, public relations, legalities, communications, and operational issues. Many thoughtful authors have looked at and continue to look at the demands placed on today’s leaders to see us through the opening of the tunnel and into the next epoch. This panel discussion will look beyond the crisis and consider the demands of successful leadership in the new world that will emerge. A sustained period we will enter once the aftermath of the tunnel has been resolved; a period we call the “After/After.” As the panel looks forward to developing leaders in the “After/After”, they see three critical challenges leaders must face: The challenge of understanding myself, which, when successfully faced, leads to the capacity for “honest engagement” and, when failed leads to what we refer to as a “transactional façade”. The challenge of perceiving the world which when successfully faced leads to “accepting reality” as it is and when failed leads to a mindset of “certitude”. The challenge of guiding the tide, which, when successfully faced, leads to the capacity for successful execution and when failed leads to the leader being “stuck in neutral”. Invited panelists include: Sudhanshu Palsule, an award-winning educator, CEO advisor, and leadership coach. Sudhanshu Palsule is regarded as one of the leading thinkers in the field of transformative leadership. He teaches at Duke Corporate Education and is an associate professor in the Advanced Management Program at INSEAD. His clients include several Fortune 100 companies, governments, and the UN.
