Using R to Work With Big Data and Web Scraping

“Analytics” is a term for processes widely used in all areas of business to describe and predict performance by synthesizing information from extremely large data sets. Data mining techniques add scope to the widely used social science statistical methods with new methods for clustering, classifying, and making predictions.

Two of the upcoming Short Courses on R offer instruction in these data science topics that are increasingly important for I-O psychologists, including “Web Scraping: Data Collection and Analysis,” led by Richard Landers, University of Minnesota, and “Analysis of Big Data” offered by Jeff Stanton, Syracuse University

The Short Courses on R are offered by CARMA, the Consortium for the Advancement of Research Methods and Analysis, which is the world’s leading provider of research methods education for organizational scholars. CARMA Executive Director Larry Williams designed the course list to offer a range of topics relevant for organizational researchers.

Thanks to the ongoing collaboration between SIOP and CARMA, SIOP members and student members can attend the intensive 3-day courses at the deeply discounted CARMA member rates.

Registrants will have opportunities to socialize and network with the instructors and faculty/doctoral students from leading universities, both during the courses and outside of the sessions, which include a mix of lecture and hands-on experiential activities. • Web Scraping: Data Collection and Analysis, led by Dr. Richard Landers, University of Minnesota
• Introduction to Bayesian Analysis with R led by Dr. Steve Culpepper, University of Illinois
• Analysis of Big Data, led by Dr. Jeff Stanton, Syracuse University

The registration fee for any of these classes also includes a “Basics of R Workshop" offered in-person at the University of South Carolina on January 9 or online on demand.
