Leslie W. Joyce and Paul W. Thayer Graduate Fellowship in I-O Psychology

The Leslie W. Joyce and Paul W. Thayer Graduate Fellowship in I-O Psychology provides financial support to doctoral students in I-O psychology who have a special interest in talent management and who plan to have a career as an I-O practitioner. The Fellowship was established to honor the exceptional mentoring relationship between Dr. Leslie Joyce and Dr. Paul Thayer—one that began in graduate school and continued through Dr. Joyce’s subsequent career.

Two $15,000 Fellowships will be awarded in the current award cycle.

Eligibility

Applicants must meet the following eligibility requirements:

  • PhD student in I-O psychology
  • SIOP Student Member
  • Specialized interest in talent management (i.e., talent acquisition, development, and deployment)
  • Committed to a practitioner career as evidenced by work experience and/or a statement of career goals
  • Some experience in an applied setting relevant to I-O

Past recipients of the Fellowship may apply for one additional year of Fellowship funding if other eligibility requirements are met.

 

Application Procedure

Applicants for the Joyce-Thayer Fellowship must submit:

  • An electronic copy of their graduate transcript.
  • A self-statement of their graduate program goals and career aspirations. Previous recipients of this Fellowship should also include in this statement a description of how the Fellowship was used to advance their program goals and prepare them for a career as an I-O practitioner.
  • A summary of their master’s thesis or summary of other completed research not to exceed 10 pages* (12-point font, 1” margins, double spaced); the summary must adhere to APA formatting guidelines.
  • A curriculum vitae that includes work assignments, paid or unpaid, related to I-O psychology.
  • Letters of support (at least 1 and not more than 3) from graduate faculty and/or supervisors in applied work settings.

*NOTE: Figures or tables may be included only if they can be incorporated into the 10-page limit. A list of references should be included with the summary; references will not be included in the 10-page maximum. Summaries should be double-spaced, 12-point font, with 1” margins.

All documentation must be submitted online by the applicant and must be either a Word document or a .pdf file.

When submitting application materials, applicants will also be asked if they are being investigated, or have been found responsible, for misconduct prohibited in SIOP’s Anti-Harassment Policy and to provide a brief explanation if this is the case.

 

Evaluation Criteria

At least three members of the Joyce-Thayer Fellowship Subcommittee will review and evaluate each applicant on the following criteria:

  • The quality of the undergraduate or graduate record, including appropriateness of coursework to specialization in talent management
  • The quality of the master’s thesis or research summary, both scientifically and practically
  • The clarity and realism of the statement of goals and aspirations
  • Relevance of any applied experience to career specialization
  • Strength of support from faculty and/or supervisors

 

Award Administration

Based on their review of all applicants, the Joyce-Thayer Fellowship Subcommittee will identify Fellowship recipients. The subcommittee reserves the right to recommend that the Fellowship be withheld if a suitable candidate does not apply.

Although a student can apply for multiple SIOP scholarships/fellowships, he or she cannot win multiple scholarships/fellowships in the same year. If an individual is recommended to receive a scholarship/fellowship by two different subcommittees, the Awards Chair for grants and scholarships will make the determination of which award the individual will receive.

Fellowship funds will be distributed to the student in a single payment and may be used for graduate school expenses (without additional restriction). The student will have two options regarding the award stipend: (a) to receive the stipend directly; or (b) to have the stipend placed in a "professional development" account at the recipient's university, contingent upon the regulations and policies of the recipient's university. The award recipient will be liable for any tax payments associated with the stipend.

Michael E. Moomaw Scholarship Fund

The Michael E. Moomaw Scholarship was established with the primary objective of fostering and promoting the pursuit of excellence in the field of Industrial-Organizational psychology. This scholarship specifically aims to support students who are dedicated to exploring the contribution of I-O psychology to mentoring, coaching, and/or leadership development, recognizing the impact of these areas on professional growth and organizational effectiveness.

One $3000 Scholarship will be awarded in the current award cycle.

Eligibility

Nominees must meet the following eligibility requirements:

  • Enrolled full-time and in good standing in a graduate program in Industrial-Organizational Psychology or a closely related field (e.g., organizational behavior) at a regionally accredited university or college. Eligibility is not limited to students in programs located in the U.S.
  • Student Member of SIOP
  • Have an active program of ongoing I-O research, with some research completed and continued research planned

Past recipients of a Moomaw Scholarship and individuals who will have defended their dissertation are not eligible.

 

Application Procedure

Applicants for the Michael E. Moomaw Scholarship must submit:

  • A nomination letter from a faculty member in the program in which the applicant is enrolled.
  • A 12-page maximum* summary of the student’s current or planned research program, including an explanation of research design(s) and other important aspects of the projects (especially those relevant to the evaluation criteria).
  • A two-page maximum curriculum vitae including scientific publications and presentations.
  • A statement from the student’s advisor indicating that the student is actively engaged in the program of research described in the application submission documents.

All documentation must be submitted online by the applicant and must be either a Word document or a .pdf file.

  • Addresses the intersection of science and practice in advancing the effectiveness of mentoring, coaching, and/or leadership development. 
  • Contributes insights into organizational or individual outcomes from mentoring, coaching, and/or leadership development.

 

Administration of Award

Based on their review of all candidates, the Moomaw Scholarship Subcommittee will identify a Scholarship recipient. The subcommittee reserves the right to recommend that the Scholarship be withheld if a suitable candidate does not apply.

Although a student can apply for multiple SIOP scholarships/fellowships, he or she cannot win multiple scholarships/fellowships in the same year. If an individual is recommended to receive a scholarship/fellowship by two different subcommittees, the Awards Chair for grants and scholarships will make the determination of which award the individual will receive.

SIOP Graduate Student Scholarships, Mary L. Tenopyr Scholarship, and Lee Hakel Graduate Student Scholarship

The Graduate Student Scholarships recognize achievement in a graduate career and is intended to assist doctoral students in the field of I-O psychology with the costs of carrying out their dissertation work.

For the current award cycle, the following scholarships will be awarded:

  • The highest ranked student will receive the Lee Hakel Graduate Student Scholarship of $3,500
  • The second highest ranked student will receive the Mary L. Tenopyr Scholarship of $3,000
  • The third and fourth highest ranked students will receive a $3,000 Graduate Student Scholarship

Each academic program may nominate no more than one student per year to apply for the scholarships. If more than one student from a program wishes to apply for a scholarship, the program must perform an initial screening.

George C. Thornton, III Graduate Scholarship

The George C. Thornton, III Graduate Scholarship offers financial assistance to a doctoral student in I-O psychology who epitomizes the scientist-practitioner model. Dr. Thornton was dedicated to training future I-O psychologists using the scientist-practitioner model—a commitment displayed in his teaching, research, and doctoral supervision activities.

The Thornton Scholarship will be given to a graduate student who exemplifies the scientist-practitioner model. The recipient must have demonstrated achievement in both the science and practice of industrial and organizational psychology.

One $3000 Scholarship will be awarded in the current award cycle.

  • Completed the master’s degree in I-O psychology in order to have enough background to demonstrate excellence in the field

Applicants for the George C. Thornton, III Graduate Scholarship must submit:

  • An electronic copy of their graduate transcript
  • A self-statement of graduate program research and practice accomplishments, graduate program goals, and career aspirations
  • A summary of the nominee’s master’s thesis not to exceed 10 pages* (12-point font, 1” margins, double spaced); the summary must adhere to APA formatting guidelines.
  • A curriculum vitae that includes work assignments, paid or unpaid, related to I-O psychology, conference presentations and attendance, publications, and service to the graduate program and field

At least three members of the Thornton Graduate Scholarship Committee (appointed by the Awards Committee Chair) will review and evaluate each applicant on the following criteria.

  • A combination of science and practice in the candidate’s practice (field) experiences and academic experiences
  • Scientific merit – includes an appreciation for and demonstration of competence in basic and applied research endeavors. Such merit might be demonstrated by:
    • Superior performance in statistics, methods, and measurement courses
    • Active participation in weekly research seminars or discussions
    • Timely completion of the master’s thesis
    • Initiation of and participation in research studies beyond the master’s thesis
    • Dissemination of research findings in publications and/or presentations
    • Attendance at and participation in scientific conferences
  • Practitioner merit – includes an appreciation for and demonstration of competence in the application of theories, methods, and research findings in organizational settings. Such merit might be demonstrated by:
    • Participation in field projects with evidence of high-quality outcomes
    • Completion of applied research studies
    • Contribution to consulting activities
    • Completion of an internship where the student displayed the characteristics of the scientist/practitioner model
  • Faculty and field supervision recommendations supporting the student’s merit on the above criteria.

Goldstein & Schneider Scholarships by the Macey Fund

In 2025, the SIOP Foundation will award the Benjamin Schneider Scholarship which offers financial assistance to a minority doctoral student in I-O psychology. The Irwin L. Goldstein Scholarship will be awarded the following year. These scholarships are made possible by the Macey Fund in recognition of the friendship that developed over the years with Dr. Goldstein and Dr. Schneider and in gratitude for their work in broadening the inclusiveness of I-O psychology.

Beth E. Buchanan Graduate Scholarship

The Beth E. Buchanan Scholarship is designed to support and encourage students in pursuing excellence in I-O psychology, particularly those focused on the ways work and organizations impact important social issues (e.g., issues affecting lower-income workers, particularly those tied into the management of work and family roles; specific types of work-family conflict episodes and the unique coping responses that are most helpful with each).

One $3000 Scholarship will be awarded in the current award cycle.
