SIOP Engages New Permanent Modernization of Congress Subcommittee Staff

This month, SIOP engaged with Republican and Democratic staff supporting the work of the U.S. House of Representatives House Administration Subcommittee on the Modernization of Congress about their priorities for the 118th Congress.  This subcommittee is the permanent successor to the House Select Committee on the Modernization of Congress, which was a temporary special subcommittee that SIOP engaged with during the 117th Congress (2021-2022).  Conversations with both majority and minority staff focused on the implementation of previously made recommendations by the select committee on how to make Congress function better as a workplace and the relevance of industrial-organizational psychology to successful implementation.  SIOP also discussed with staff a desire by the subcommittee to reintroduce a resolution on evidence-based policymaking that would establish a Commission on Evidence-based Policymaking to encourage better use of data when creating legislation.  When introduced, SIOP is going to endorse the resolution and continues to engage with the subcommittee on areas of relevance to I-O. SIOP Submits Outside Witness Testimony on FY 2024 Federal Funding Legislation

SIOP submitted testimony to the House and Senate Appropriations Committees advocating for inclusion of I-O funding priorities in the fiscal year (FY) 2024 federal spending legislation. The testimony encourages increased funding for social science research at the National Science Foundation (NSF), as well as inclusion of team science principles when designing interdisciplinary programs through the new Technology, Innovation, and Partnership (TIP) Directorate. The testimony also requests increased funding levels for programs supporting I-O psychology graduate education at the Department of Education and social science research at the Department of Defense. Finally, the testimony supports SIOP’s ongoing partnership with the Department of Justice Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) Office by emphasizing the need for improved evaluation efforts and effectiveness studies to examine the efficacy of COPS Office programming and awardee projects.

The FY 2024 appropriations process has been delayed by negotiations over the debt ceiling, with the House Appropriations Committee rescheduling consideration of bills expected to begin this week. Congress has until September 30, 2023 to finalize its spending legislation for the coming fiscal year; however, Congress regularly misses this deadline and is expected to do so again this year.
