SIOP Past President Steven Rogelberg Testifies Before House Modernization Committee

On June 8, Dr. Steven Rogelberg, SIOP’s immediate past president, testified before the House Select Committee on the Modernization of Congress during a hearing titled “Pathways to Congressional Service.” Dr. Rogelberg’s testimony focused on ways members of Congress can maintain a positive work environment for themselves and their staff.  Dr. Rogelberg’s recommendations included having members of Congress redefine their definitions of success, embrace small wins, and facilitate supportive and transparent environments for staff. He also advised Congress to work together to address “pain points” that are making it difficult to legislate.  Dr. Rogelberg’s testimony follows several engagements between SIOP and the House Modernization Committee, including an interview between Dr. Rogelberg and Representative Derek Kilmer (D-WA), the Chairman of the Select Committee, and Representative Kilmer’s recent participation in a panel on the congressional workplace at the 2022 SIOP Annual Conference.

SIOP Submits Testimony on FY 2023 Appropriations

As part of the fiscal year (FY) 2023 appropriations process, SIOP submitted testimony to congressional committees responsible for determining annual spending levels and priorities.  SIOP requested that the committees support robust funding for the National Science Foundation (NSF), including the Directorate for Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences (SBE) and the Science of Organizations program specifically.  SIOP encouraged the committees to support the research community’s request of $11 billion for NSF overall, which includes funding for the new Directorate for Technology, Innovation, and Partnerships (TIP).  SIOP also requested that Congress fund the Department of Justice’s Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) Office Hiring Program and requested that the office survey the recipients of its awards to better understand their workforce challenges.  Finally, the testimony encouraged the Department of Labor to coordinate with the National Academy of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) on a study exploring recently elevated levels of workforce turnover, dubbed the “Great Resignation.”  The committees are currently reviewing all testimony and drafting the FY 2023 appropriations bills for consideration over the coming weeks and months.
